WILLA + SALT = :)

We have big news, and we want you to be a part of it!

SALT’s fearless President and Creative Director, Elizabeth Myer, has been quietly exploring a new creative endeavor – screenwriting! To date, Liz and her writing partner, Kaly Sullivan, have written three feature-length scripts, all of which are (miraculously!) in development. And now, after years of dreaming and developing, her first feature film is on the road to the big screen (and you can help!).

Introducing Willa, a cinematic love letter to one of America’s greatest writers: Pulitzer Prize-winning author Willa Cather.

Here’s the logline (or quick summary): In the early 1900s, a queer, trailblazing writer navigates identity, creativity, and ambition while resisting pressure to conform. Told through three love stories, Willa charts the early life of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Willa Cather as she forges a life on her own terms – only finding success once she makes peace with her past and herself.

We’ve already assembled a powerhouse team to bring this story to life:

  • Two fantastic producers are attached, each with impressive credits, including Wildcat (starring Maya Hawke, directed by Ethan Hawke), a biographical drama about Flannery O'Connor’s struggle to publish her first novel while battling lupus; Blue Moon, Richard Linklater’s latest film; and The Way of the Wind, Terrence Malick’s highly anticipated biblical epic about the life of Jesus.

  • A thoughtful and visionary director, Seanne Winslow, is also on board. She played a key role in bringing The Lego Movie to life, oversaw the making of Sherlock Holmes (starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law), and co-directed The Falconer, a stunning and deeply moving drama.

As you know, independent films like Willa are essential for amplifying diverse and thought-provoking stories. But projects like this need champions. That’s where you come in!

We’re currently raising $50,000 in development funds to hire a Casting Director, a Line Producer (to finalize our budget), and cover travel expenses as we crisscross the country securing the financing to bring this story to life.

If you – or someone you know – has a passion for film and wants to be part of this journey, we’d love to have you on board! Your tax-deductible donation will be put to good use, and donors will receive a “Thank You” credit in the film (plus exclusive updates on screenings and premiere details!). You can contribute through SALT's Giving Page or reach out directly to Liz at liz@saltproject.org to learn more.

With excitement and gratitude,
The SALT Team
