Since the 1990s, the Democratic Republic of Congo has suffered from the deadliest global conflict since World War II.  Two civil wars have taken the lives of 6 million people and an estimated 2 million have been displaced from their homes and their communities.

Because of their deep relationships in the Congo, Global Ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ, has made standing with the people of the Congo a priority.  In 2011 the Disciples General Assembly and UCC General Synod each passed a resolution entitled “A Call for Reflection and Advocacy on Behalf of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.” 

The resolution was passed in order to, “raise awareness of and engage settings of the church in advocacy regarding the violent conflicts and human rights abuses in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.”  The resolution also calls on the church to, “reflect and advocate on behalf of sisters and brothers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.” 

SALT was fortunate enough to partner up with the Global Ministries' Congo Initiative this summer to bring churches around the world a glimpse of life in the Congo.  Over the next few days, we’ll post the videos we’ve been working on and pray that churches will continue in their mission of promoting justice, defending women and children, and supporting our brothers and sisters in the Congo so that we all might rejoice!
